Bulging and herniated disc pain
Your spine is made up of 24 bones known as vertebrae that are cushioned by discs that protect the bone by acting as shock absorbers. Injury and weakness in the disc can cause the inner section to herniate or bulge, often referred to as ‘slipped disc’. This often results in pain and/or irritation of nerves in this area. Many factors can decrease the strength and resilience of a disc and increase the risk of a disc injury. Poor lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise, smoking and sustained poor posture can contribute to poor disc health. Disc injuries can occur in any section of the spine but are more common in the lower back. They can happen suddenly or can be a build of repetitive trauma overtime.
Symptoms
- Can occur without any pain
- Can occur in any part of your spine from neck to lower back but more common in the low back or lumbar spine
- Pain around the area of herniation
- Radiating pain across the hips or into the buttocks
- Numbness or pain radiating down the leg, ankle or foot
- Pain that worsens with certain movements, when sitting, standing or walking short distances
- Weakness into muscles of the leg or foot
- Pins and needles
Treatment and Care
As with all conditions that present at the clinic, we will run through a thorough consultation and carry out a range of neurological and orthopaedic tests to help identify the root cause and formulate a personalised care plan. Spinal adjustments, strengthening corrective exercises and general lifestyle advice may be used as part of your care plan to aid your recovery. Chiropractic care can also help you avoid disc problems in the future by identifying risk factors.
